This is a website called Oliver's Campaign and has been developed by Oliver McGowan's family following his death as a teenager. Oliver had a number of health conditions including autism and sadly passed away in hospital. His death has since been ruled as preventable. Paula McGowan, Oliver's mother, launched a parliamentary petition asking for all doctors and nurses to receive mandatory training in learning disability and autism awareness.
This petition gained cross-party support and as a direct consequence, the Government announced that all NHS and social care staff (which will include PAs) would receive The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism. This is currently being piloted in different areas so isn't available everywhere yet. However, we think it would be great for every PA who supports someone with a learning disability or autism is aware of this initiative and having a look at this website is a great place to start.
More information on the training that is being developed can be found here: https://www.bild.org.uk/oliver-mcgowan-mandatory-training-trial/
There are also lots of useful links to other organisations which can be found here: https://www.olivermcgowan.org/support-services
You can look at the website at your leisure.
The content on this website is free. We don't know yet if the training will be free or how it will be delivered in your area.
