This is a short video from Skills for Care that explores Individual Employers sharing their real experiences of employing Personal Care Assistants (PAs for short). They speak openly about managing Direct Payments, recruiting their own PAs, setting boundaries, handling administration and building strong and respectful working relationships through communication and understanding. The aim of the video is for you to learn from others and adapt it to your own role. Learning what this looks like from an employer's perspective may help PAs better understand expectations, responsibilities and the reasoning behind boundaries and contracts.
The video highlights the differences you may experience between employers and being a PA is not a 'one-size-fits-all' structure - one employer may prefer physical paperwork while another may prefer to go fully digital. Accommodating their preference is beneficial for both you and your employer.
They also discuss that training is a positive investment in a PAs development and that an Individual Employer may be able to apply for training funded through Skills for Care to help cover the costs of their PAs training. There is much more discussed and showed in the video - we encourage you to watch in full to understand what being an Individual Employer really looks like.
